Just slightly too firm for my back, but I put a pillow behind me. The zippers allow this to be attached all together as one piece or for the 3 pieces to be used separately. Zipping them together prevents the pieces sliding and leaving you in a "hole" in the middle. This review is from: Contour Backmax Support System (Health and Beauty) I had back surgery in Dec. 2006 and needed something (and still do) to allow me to sleep in the bed. This is perfect. I've even brought it with me on vacation (it doesn't pack very well though for airline travel ;) I can now sleep through the night, in bed with my wife, with relatively no pain. I only need to find a very thin pillow for me head because a regular pillow causes me some neck discomfort due to lifting my head too much and the BackMax is a little too firm to use no pillow. But that's nothing compared to the relief I've gotten from this product. I highly recommend it for anyone with back issues. However, be prepared for the fact that you'll probably still need some extra pillows to really customize it and you may really feel the absence of arm supports. I'd suggest to the company that they'd have a much better product if they included a little flip-pillow for the full-recline positions and some arm supports.
